"Save thyself, and come down from the cross." Mark 15:30
Words of mockers who passed by our Lord while wagging their heads in disdain.
They didn't realize that Christ stayed on the cross for them.
Yes, Jesus could have called ten thousand angels; He could have come down off that cross and said, "Forget them, they are not worth dying for."
But instead, in His great love, mercy and compassion, He said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)
Jesus did not go to the cross for Himself.
He was not beaten, scourged and disgraced for Himself.
He did not have nails pierce His hands and His feet because of His sins.
His side was not pierced for His sins, and He did not stay on the cross for Himself.
He stayed on that cross for His mockers-
He stayed on that cross for sinners-
He stayed on that cross for you, and for me.
He paid a debt we could not pay.
WHAT A SAVIOUR!
Jesus did not need to be saved...
We did...
But that's just me!
"Love was compressed for all history in that lonely figure on the cross, who said that He could call down angels at any moment on a rescue mission, but chose not to-because of us. At Calvary, God accepted His own unbreakable terms of justice." Phillips Brooks.
"It was Christ who willingly went to the cross, and it was our sins that took Him there."
Franklin Graham
